Water parameters for reed tetra

  • PH value: 5.5 – 7.5
  • GH (total hardness): 5° – 20° dGH
  • Temperature: 22° – 28°C

Appearance

These tetras grow up to 2.5 cm in size, depending on the specimen, if the aquarium is large enough and well fed, making them especially suitable for smaller aquariums. The male reed tetras form a long extended dorsal or ventral fin until the adult stage. Through this one can clearly distinguish the sexes. The color of this fish ranges from silver to shiny gold. This coloration is interrupted only by a black pattern on the tail.

Breeding

Breeding reed sparrows in the aquarium is possible, but it is often not successful. It is important that the aquarium is dark and has a PH value of about 6.5 and a temperature of 25°C. To guarantee the survival of the young animals, the larvae should be removed from the aquarium, as they will be eaten by the parents or other animals. Additionally, newly hatched reed tetras require very small live foods.

Keeping reed tetra

Reed tetras are easy fish to keep, but they make certain demands on the aquarium in which they live. To provide swimming space and hiding places, the tank should be heavily planted in places. Also stones or roots should not be missing. To prevent too strong light, floating plants should be present. The reed tetra is a schooling fish and must therefore be kept in a group with at least 5-10 animals. With the food this fish is uncomplicated. Mini granules are therefore completely sufficient. From time to time live or frozen food can also be fed.
