Alkanet (Alkanna tinctoria) also known as the dyer's alkanet is a plant that belongs to the family Boraginaceae and is endemic to the coastal areas of the Eastern Mediterranean. Its flowers stand out for their special blue-purple color and the root for the deep red. From its root is produced a substance that is widely used as a natural pigment in cosmetics as well as foods, wines and liqueurs, but also for the painting of wood, stone. The root as a dye is soluble in alcohol and oils, but is insoluble in water.
It is used in traditional Indian food under the name Ratan Jot and adds its red color to some versions of Curry. It is also used as a vegetable.

The plant has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-ageing, anti-itching, astringent and healing properties. It is suitable for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, in the healing of all wounds, burns, ulcers of all kinds, hemorrhoids and other skin diseases such as acne.

It is applied externally to the skin as an astringent and healing in the form of ointment and oily extract.
