Fish of the Hippocampus genus of the Hippocampinae (seahorses) subfamily of the Syngnathidae family of the Syngnathiformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Long-snouted seahorse (Hippocampus guttulatus) was first described in 1829 by the French naturalist and zoologist Georges Cuvier (1769-1832).

It inhabits the depths of 1-20 meters. The maximum recorded length is 21.5 cm. It has a sedentary lifestyle. It feeds on small crustaceans and shrimps.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea, more common in its northern part.
