Seed Exchange Lots for 2008

Every effort is made to avoid spelling errors, species are listed under the name supplied by the contributor and thus vary as to classification system.  Not all hybrid names are registered or found in other reference works.
hp = hand pollinated seeds.  Seed lots not marked are hp.
op = open pollinated
cp = controlled pollination, which differs from "hp" in that the stigma is physically covered after pollination. This covering is meant to act as an extra protection against accidental contamination with unknown pollen.
cw = collected in the wild

Note:  Lots shown with a strikethrough seed description are SOLD OUT as of June 21, 2008.

370. [(SM149 x SM189) x SM30] x 2406   Goal: Large, frilly flower with much yellow and good pink
371. SM502 x 502like   Goal: improved picotee
372. (502like x SM247) x 502like   Goal: Good picotee on half of progeny, with good yellow standard

Individual parents, all R. occidenta28-1, 28-2 – doubles. Sometimes not all flowers are double
SM30 – “Crescent City Gold” Much yellow on all five petals, smaller flowers
SM303 – Thin stripe reddish-brown picotee.  All picotees are reddish-brown
SM502 – Good, wide picotee on mature plants. Also known as “Humboldt Picotee”; see below.
502like – Best, deepest picotee
(SM30 X SM247)06-1, (SM30 X SM247)06-2, First generation crosses towards deal of pink.
(502like X 247) - This plant is used as a parent partly because it has good yellow standard. Also, it is likely that Britt Smith is correct and picotee is recessive. In that case, all progeny should have one recessive gene for picotee.
'Frank Mossman' This cross is SM232 X DD12, done by Dick Cavender. It is large and frilly. DD12 has been registered as 'Double Dig Twelve'.
'Tatum's Yellow Standard' This was found by Tom Tatum on Stagecoach Hill.  It has a lot of yellow on the top three petals.
Dick Cavender has registered 'Crescent City Gold', 'Humboldt Picotee', 'Frank Mossman' and 'Double Dig Twelve' ( DD12) producing all yellow flowers. These are Mr. Oliver's best two plants so far. This was the original  cross done by Britt Smith done towards the all yellow flower.
HS #5 – Howard Slonecker found this. It is a relatively large flower with yellow on all five petals, but not as much as SM30.
2406 – It has yellow on all five petals, and in the wild it had a great deal of pink.

Notes:
1 R. brachycarpum ssp. tigerstedtii: Controlled pollination at Arboretum Mustila between several original plants Dr. C. G. Tigerstedt grew from
seed collected in 1930 in North Korea, Mt. Pungsan, 1200 m altitude. (Please note that this is the "real thing" described by Nitzelius as
ssp. tigerstedtii, whereas some of the "spp./var./Group tigerstedtii" around the world appears to have questionable smirnowii-type features.
These often very hardy hybrids probably descend from seed open-pollinated by hardy Seidel smirnowii hybrids at Arboretum Mustila.)

Based on the Pollen-to-Seed Program Mr. Theqvist ordered pollen from RSF and formed a small hybridizer team in Finland. The two other hybridizers in addition to Mr. Theqvist were Osmo Jussila from Naantali and Jaakko Saarinen from Arboretum Mustila.

To optimize the amount of seed they made R. brachycarpum ssp. tigerstedtii crosses with two separate plants, one at Naantali and another at Arboretum Mustila. The seed batches were merged before sending to ARS.

The main aim in the hybridization program was to to get hardy big-leaf plants by using the super hardy R. brachycarpum ssp. tigerstedtii and hardy proven Finnish hybrids as seed parent and pollen from big-leaf Rhododendron species. In addition there were side goals for yellow flowers, late flowering and good indumentum.  So far he has seen a couple of good results when crossing big-leaved not-so-hardy species with the super hardy R. brachycarpum ssp. tigerstedtii.

Mr. Theqvist was a bit hesitant in giving his two mix-up batches (lot #'s 385 & 386) on the list as these things should not happen. However, he felt that the cross is interesting with either R. arizelum or R. sinofalconeri and the resulting plants may tell which one of the two possibilities was the actual pollen giving species. He has R. brachycarpum ssp. tigerstedtii x R. rex (a cross by Kaarel Voitk) and in Sweden he has seen a nice cross with R. macabeanum.

2 Ms. Kehoe's form of "controlled pollination" is to take the potted plants into her mud room and pollinate there. Only one plant in there at a time and the plant stays inside until the blossom has fallen off! There should be almost no chance of cross-pollination. All her seed goes into the refrigerator as soon as the pods have dried for 24 hours at room temperature.
3 'Snowbird' is a natural white hybrid of R. atlanticum and R. canescens bought from Whitney Gardens and is very fragrant.
4 2006 seed that Ms. Kehoe harvested in May 2007. The seed has been refrigerated since it was harvested.

1 Mr. Nicolella took cuttings of an east coast 'species' thought to be R. adenogynum. It checks out to be more closely associated with R. alutaceum as it has a bi-strate indumentum and small calyx. Foliage sample sent to Mr. Hootman who stated that it appears to be a R. roxieanum hybrid.
2 Fortune F2 = Mr. Berg selfed his Fortune and Mr. Fujioka grew seed. Pollen from Mr. Fujioka.
3 R. macabeanum Pollen received from Ms. Sinclair. She stated that it is from a friends plant and it is one of the best forms of R. macabeanum
4 (R. strigillosum x R. macabeanum) = Ms. Sinclair hybrid; pollen received from her.
5 Pollen from Ms. Sinclair
6 Cutting from plant growing in Planting Fields Arboretum, NY
7 R. dendrocharis = strawberry-red Ms. Sinclair plant.
8 R. fargesii = cutting taken from Mr. Burns' garden of a Mr. Lincoln Foster selection
9 (Dexter's Champagne x Phipps Yellow) = large yellow flowers with red in throat
10 Gate Cream - not registered. cutting from Mr. Murcott. The following was copied from Mr. Murcott's web page:
http://garden.murcott.com/hybrids/ : This is a plant that I have. Not the 'Gate Cream' from Heritage Plantation.  From the Collins collection at Planting Fields. Cream color, fragrant. (Judge Collins was an early collector of Dexter hybrids. He eventually sold his land to Nassau County as a park, Takapausha Preserve, and most of his Dexter plants to Mr. Coe at Planting Fields. Some of his rhododendrons were also moved to Eisenhower Park.) I've used this in hybridizing and gotten some nice plants.
11 (Lady DeCeis x R. discolor) = Large flowered Mr. Nearing grex of two plants grown by Mr. Burns
12 R. barbatum UBC = From University of British Colombia, Canada. Ms. Sinclair states that it is the finest form of R. barbatum
13 Margolit = The following was copied from Mr. Murcott's web page: http://garden.murcott.com/hybrids/ : A Nat Hess plant.
Nat told me two stories about this plant at different times. Once he said he made the cross of Cavalcade x Hardy fortunei. Then later, he said the seed came from Hafdem Lem. (Nat got a lot of seed from Lem.) It is flesh colored, perfect sphere of a truss and hardy to +5 F. It is the Hebrew spelling of Nat's wife's first name Margaret.
14 Label lost, very Dexter like pink with purple in throat, blooms same time as Dexter's Spice.
15 R. strigillosum Avery = the best form of 7 different R. strigillosums that Ms. Sinclair grows.
16 (Robert Schill x R. maximum) = Large growing, glossy foliage, cream flowers with calyx
17 (Vulcan x Michele Ilena) = Non-fading true red, slight indumentum, blooms just after Taurus.
18 (R. mallotum x R. proteiodes) = red. UK horticultural group thought this plant to be the best rhododendron in Warren Berg's garden.
19 Whitestone = Double flowers and has produced double flowered progeny.
20 R. yakushimanum hybrid = one of the first unnamed English yak hybrids to enter USA via Mr. Burns. Excellent flat deep green foliage with both persistent tomentum and plastered indumentum. very good low habit – flowers similar to Fantastica but smaller.
21 R.metternichii v. kyomaruense f. leucanthum seed grown from cw seed from Mt. Amagi, Japan by Mr. Yoshihiro Matsui, SuSono, Japan. ARS 1979/306. Flower bud scales are reddish and covered with tomentum. White flowers have mild fragrance similar to R. yakushimanum.
