Common Name Lionet's Sudamerlycaste [French Grower of species late 1800's early 1900's]

Flower Size 4" [10 cm]

Found in Colombia? at higher elevations as a giant sized, cold growing terrestrial that blooms in the summer on basal, erect, single flowered inflorescence held beneath the leaves.

Positive ID by Henry Oakley as this species has been known from a single herbarium collection in 1899 sent to Cogniaux by the French orchid grower Mssr Lionet and a single watercolor in Cogniuax & Goossens Dictionaire Iconographique des Orchidees shown above. We at last have a positive photo representation of this beautiful species.
