Gongora Page SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Gongoreae, SUBTRIBE Stanhopeinae. The 52 species of this genus are spread from Mexico to Bolivia and Brazil. These have mostly pendant inflorescences so a basket of some sort is called for. They also do not like to dry out so water and fertilize regularly and grow under intermediate to warm conditions. They are part of the Stanhopea subtribe and grow from sea level up to 1000 meters in elevation. They have ribbed ovoid pseudobulbs with 2 to 3 apical thin, heavily veined leaves. The inflorescence arises from the base of the pseudobulb and hangs with many non resupinate, upside down flowers on a pendant spike. These plants are epiphytes and many are found in association with ant nests. The parts of the Gongora flower are as follows, pedicel {#1}, lateral sepals {#2}, labellum {#3}, petals {#4}, column {#5}, and the dorsal sepal {#6}.
