Description:
Annuals or perennials. Culms 32-90 cm high, tufted; nodes glabrous. Leaves 5-21 x 0.3-0.6 cm, linear or linear-lanceolate, base rounded, apex acuminate; sheaths to 8 cm long, keeled; ligules fimbriate, membranous. Panicles 7-22 cm long, lax; rachis triquetrous, bearing paired spikelets. Spikelets 3-4 mm long, elliptic-lanceolate, green or purplish. Lower glume absent or reduced to a ring. Upper glume 3-4 x 1-1.5 mm, ovate-lanceolate, 5-nerved. Lower floret barren, epaleate. Upper floret bisexual. First lemma 3-3.5 x 1-1.5 mm, chartaceous. Second lemma 2-2.5 x 1 mm, ovate-oblong, crustaceous, 3-5-nerved. Palea 2-2.5 x 1 mm, ovate-oblong, crustaceous, 2-keeled. Stamens 3. Stigmas reddish-brown.
