E and S Asia (Iran to India, Korea, S Japan and Neuguinea), introduced with rice crops to other parts of the world, for example N Italy (rice crop regions, also in Liguria), Spain, Portugal and S France (Camargue), also to greenhouses in central and N Europe

Diagnosis:
|
Shell light horny coloured, thin, translucent, shiny, striated and sometimes with fine spiral lines forming a fine reticulate pattern and spirally arranged short hairs, upper side concave, lower side flat, 3.5-4 whorls, last whorl broadened, aperture slightly bent to the upper side.
The animal is light grey, head and foot with blackish spots.
Flatter than G. albus, whorls increasing more slowly, mantle with large pigment patches visible from outside the shell.

In rice crops, occasionally in thermal springs. Survives in central and N European greenhouses and fish tanks, but not outside.
