About 200 species of annuals, perennials and shrubs of worldwide distribution, but especially from the Mediterranean region. They have entire, generally narrow alternate leaves and terminal clusters of wide open five-petalled flowers which can be showy.

Uses

Suitable for the rock garden, raised bed, dry wall and alpine house. A sunny site and well drained, ideally calcareous soil is required. Propagation by seed in spring or cuttings in late summer.
