Between 11 and 14 species of annuals and perennials from the Himalaya, central and eastern Asia. They fall into two distinct groups: the caulescent species have leafy, often tall stems, while in the acaulescent group all the leaves arise in a tuft or rosette at ground level. Both groups have tubular, five-lobed flowers rather like those of a foxglove, and pinnate foliage.
Members of the acaulescent group make fine plants for the rock garden. Well-drained, but not dry humus-rich soil and a site in sun or light shade are required. Propagation by seed in spring. Division and basal cuttings are sometimes possible in spring and early summer respectively.
