Botanical Description

Bulb about 8cm across, somewhat flattened when large. Stem to 1m, or more high. Leaves numerous, narrowly lanceolate, acute. Flowers two to five in a whorl, surmounted by a tuft of a few leaves, unscented, pale orange or rarely yellow, broadly campanulate, flared at the mouth. Tepals 3.5-5cm long, with a small white nectary about 2mm in diameter at the base. Anther filaments white with a brown spot near the anther. Style divided at the apex. Capsule winged. Central Asia, in the Pamir-Alai, mostly in Soviet Tadjikistan, in scrub and rocky places in rich loamy soil at about 2000m. [Pl.181]
