About 35 species of shrubs from New Zealand and south-eastern Australia. They are wiry-stemmed, lax to rigid, with crowded, small, simple, evergreen leaves. The tubular flowers with five spreading petal lobes arise singly in all the upper leaf axils, forming spike-like inflorescences which can be showy.
Mainly alpine house plants, but the smaller species described here from mountain habitats can stand considerable frost and are worth trying outside. Acid peaty soil and a sunny site are needed.
Propagation by seed in spring, cuttings in late summer, or layering in autumn or spring.
