Clump to mat-forming with slender, erect stems to about 15cm in height, sometimes much more. Leaves rosetted, oblong spathulate to obovate, crenate, stalked, sublustrous. Flowers usually solitary, sometimes two to five, horizontal to erect, funnel-shaped, with long flared lobes, about 2.5cm long, lilac-blue. Southern U.S.S.R. and Turkey (Anatolia), in mountain pastures and stony slopes above 1800m. C.s. subsp. wolgensis (Eastern Russia) has violet flowers, while those of subsp. altaica are pale blue (Russia and eastern Ukraine). Allied to C. patula subsp. abietina and needs dividing every few years to maintain vigour.
