Neatly tufted and rosette-forming, 2-5cm tall. Leaves linear, grassy, acute, 2-8cm by l-2mm, often recorded as having an attractive reddish cast, particularly towards the base. Flowers 2-3cm across on stems half the length of the leaves, usually white, with five petals. Forms have been found with a striking dark eye or in deep pink or light magenta. Mountains throughout Andean South America, in a wide range of habitats, from bare dry hard stony levels, dwarf puna grassland, wet moraines and light loose sandy soil slopes at 3500-4800m; these no more than a sample of field notes. At different points in the wild it may be found in flower during practically every month of the year except perhaps September-October.
