Botanical Description

Height and spread 30-60cm, sometimes more. Some branchlets occasionally spine-tipped. Leaves deciduous, 1-1.7cm long, linear-lanceolate to oblong or obovate, blue to grey-green, with a short white spine-like point. Flowers with five tepals, pink or greenish-white, in short, loose terminal racemes, summer. Fruiting tepals to 5 X 6mm, equalling or just exceeding the glossy brown nut. Southern and eastern Russia to central Asia, in semi-desert and steppe country.
