Very peaceful fish to other species.  To each other males are very aggressive, especially in a small aquarium.  The aquarium should be set up with stones, driftwood and roots, and on the sides and background densely planted, because they need hiding places and the male makes a large territory. Within that territory several females have their own small territory.  In the middle you should give them plenty of free swimming space.  The substrate should be dark to bring out the colours of this fish.

You should give them small live food such as insect larvae.  They barely accept dry food.

Breeding is difficult.  To be successful the water should be extremely soft and acid.  Up to 150 eggs are laid and fertilized on a flat stone or the leave of a plant.  The female takes care for the fry and the male defends the territory.  When the young fishes are swimming free you can raise them with baby brine shrimp.
